Robinson’s career was cut short after suffering a head injury that left her permanently blind. However, she continued her community service and helped establish Sojourner Truth Home, a women’s shelter in LA, and worked with local leaders to desegregate LA beaches and schools.
Georgia Ann Robinson, born in 1879, was recruited by the Los Angeles PD and was the first African American police officer for the department, and possibly the country. She was hired as a jail matron, which was the first role for women in law enforcement. #BlackHistoryMonth https://t.co/T852DV49Qr
Some have credited Reeves as being the inspiration behind the Lone Ranger. “Bass Reeves is the closest real person to resemble the fictional Lone Ranger on the American western frontier of the nineteenth century,” biographer Art T. Burton writes in Black Gun, Silver Star.
Bass Reeves was reported to be one of the first African American U.S. Marshals, hired in 1875 to catch outlaws in the pre-statehood Oklahoma territory, under the jurisdiction of the United States court for Western Arkansas, located in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
