Monterey County Sheriff Information

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for safeguarding the lives and property of the people within the county. It is headed by Sheriff-Coroner Steve Bernal. The MCSO is comprised of three main bureaus which are Administration, Enforcement, and Corrections. Within the Administration Bureau you’ll find the Forensic Services Team, HR, Professional Standards & Training, and Citizen’s Complaint Office. The Enforcement Bureau can be divided into two divisions – Patrol and Investigations. The Corrections Bureau, on the other hand, is comprised of the Detention Division, Court Services Division, Work Alternative Program, and the Corrections Ombudsman. The MCSO also operates two substations which are located in Monterey and King City.

The Detention Division of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office oversees the Monterey County Jail. This facility houses sentenced and unsentenced male and female inmates. It receives inmates and prisoners from all law enforcement agencies in the county. The facility houses approximately 1100 inmates in the 31 housing units.
